Not illustrated. 1843 Excerpt: ... liquors, seems on the whole, not to have increased, while in many places, efforts for the promotion of Total Abstinence from them, and for the legal suppression of the sale of them, have been made with great vigor, and with gratifying success. There is an increasing conviction, which augurs well for the cause of Temperance, that efforts for the promotion of this cause, in order to be permanently successful, must be put forth, more in the way of presenting those principles, and particular truths of the Gospel, which bear distinctly on this world-wide form of iniquity. In this way, it is believed that Temperance will be elevated to its proper rank as a Christian duty, and intemperance, like every other form of iniquity, will, with the progress of the Gospel, continue to decline. It is refreshing to receive the intelligence from various churches, that they have enjoyed, during the past year, seasons of unusual interest in divine things, during which Christians have been quickened by the Holy Spirit, in faith and duty, and sinners have been, in considerable numbers, hopefully born again. The churches that are reported by name as thus signally favored, are the East and West churches in Suffield, the churches in East Granby, First North Village, churches in Coventry, First in Rockville, North Mansfield, South Mansfield, Willimanlic, First and Second churches in New London, First church in Norwich, South church in Hartford, churches in Plainville, New Fairfield, Trumbull, Torringford, Torrington, Southington, North and South Glastenbury, the church in Yale College, and the churches in the city of New Haven. These refreshings have been vouchsafed in connection with the use of the ordinary means of grace, and have been characterized by great stillness and solemnity...
